I've actually been able to do some drawing. Here and there. Mostly at school or work.
The theme has been abandoned, and I am using the sketchbook as a "journal." In other words, just drawing aimlessly. But isn't that the way it is?

This one happened back in September. The first night of my diagnosis/treatment planning class.

Did this one at the dining room table. That might be me as a child.

Community Services Board. Between clients.

Did this in the front row of class (still in progress). Right in plain view of my professor. Quite ballsy. I promise I'm learning how to do awesome treatment plans.

Got til January to fill this thing up. 24 more pages.

Obsessive Doodles for Children

My friend asked me in January if I would do a piece for her nursery.
I said, "Of course!"
Her daughter was due in July, and I felt that I had quite a bit of time to make it perfect.

She requested a tree, but a "lighter tree," a "softer tree."
I get it. She wanted nursery-friendly.
She liked the aged look of my paperback covers, but she wanted a larger size.

I purchased watercolor paper and "aged" it by painting it with tea. Luzianne works wonders.

Because of it's size, I couldn't scan the whole thing, but I like the result.
(It's a bit tilted, as well.)
Must be seen in person.

And I need to figure out how I'm going to add the family names that are supposed to be hanging in the tree.
Hmmm.

Egads.

I very much like working on small drawings. 8" X 4" is perfect.
But I purchased some larger paper for a friend's "commissioned" piece, and now the doodler in me feels a need to use all of this nice, BIG watercolor paper.

I also have a yard sale picture frame that I'd like to fill.

So do bigger drawings. Not a big deal.

Except, I really like to make small drawings.

I had fun with this one. I did it while watching "The Parent Trap."
The one with Haley Mills.
Notice how much space I left on the paper.
And the image is just horrible because I couldn't fit the whole thing on the scanner.

But I will continue to experiment with larger sizes. See how it goes.

So, during the last few (several) months I have been relying on the same excuse: I am too busy to tend to my *cough* artwork.

Then, I signed up for the sketchbook project (see last post) and that relit a fire in me. Unfortunately, I have hit a bit of a rough stitch. I was ambitious and opted to have a random theme assigned to me rather than choosing my own from the list of possibles.

My theme: Figuring Yourself Out.

I haven't the foggiest. I'm just going to use it as a sketchbook and work off-theme. Take that!

However, I did attend a figure drawing class a few weeks ago. My first in two years. I thought, "Figures, "figure yourself out," figures!" Why not? Then I remembered that I am not great at figure drawing.

Also, it's difficult to draw bodies in a tiny 6" X 8" sketchbook (My own. Not the one from the "project")

Alas, I am not going to be drawing many more figures. But I'm going to use the next week to get some projects finished. I just drew a really great tree for a friend.

That Dog Won't Hunt

Ach. School. So tired. I haven't had this burnt-out-on-school feeling in years and yearsandyears. Only a few more weeks. I have some art that I need to be working on: A piece for another friend's nursery, an engagement thingy, and thank-you card otherthing. I'm putting those off until May.

The only doodling I'm doing lately is the purest doodle one can doodle: Bored in class.

I filled almost a whole page in my Addictive Disorders class. When the professor saw me scribbling furiously, I had to take a few notes at the bottom. You know, to throw him off my scent.

I drew this little bird in a bear mask.

Here is a duck in a bear mask, trying to fit in with the bears. I'm going to perhaps flush this out into a finished piece.

When I find the time, of course.

This is my great-great grandmother, Edith. She lived in St. Louis. I just like the picture. Can you imagine wearing a dress like that everyday?

Aha, I am still finding book covers on which to noodle and doodle. This one was a thesaurus. This one took shape while I made pecan blondies from scratch. I was also avoiding midterm studies. I've eaten about 20 blondies today. This one. I don't know about this one. Antlers that look like tree-branches and vaguely flame-like trees.

How Toys Become Real

I found a copy of The Velveteen Rabbit in my mother's bookshelf on Saturday, just a day after I had completed this doodle. (This doodle was inspired by said book.) I thought that it was my copy, and I even said, "You have my old book!" My mother corrected me, telling me that she had used the book with her clients when she was a therapist--"To help them with themes of reality." She had written her name in the front cover. I swore that it was my book. My mother told me, "No, you just liked to write your name in everything when you were little." And there it was, my name, written quite messily, a few pages into the book.

Later in the day, I picked up a porcelain dog that my father had brought back from Japan or somewhere. Some little imp had drawn on the bottom of the dog's feet with a pencil.

So, themes: Love can make you real. It's hard to love something that's shiny or pointy. Just because you write your name in something doesn't necessarily make it yours. As a child, I was sort of destructive. Coincidence is fun.

So, I lied. I still have some old book covers lying around. I didn't think I'd have the time to doodle, but, I was wrong. In fact, it turns out the stress of doing research can drive a body batty. I was looking for any excuse to take a break. Going for a run, mopping the floor, doodling a little bit. I did this one with my note-taking pen. Then I slapped on a bit of paint. It only took ten minutes. Maybe the whole "sketch and plan" thing needs to be scrapped for good. At least, for therapy's sake.

My doodles are usually very geometric--lines, grids, cubes--but only when I'm doodling (not paying attention) in class.
When I doodle at home, usually a result of craving the feel and smell of art supplies, I return to this avian theme.

I can't stop thinking about sweaters and shoes. Stuff I can't afford.

Time Not Well Spent

I started classes again on Monday.
(I could rant here about the idiots who text/facebook during class, but I won't.)
I had hoped to get some "fun" done during my two-week hiatus, but such was not the case.

If anything, I decided to wrap up the whole "book cover" series and start some larger-format pieces.
And I'm teaching myself calligraphy.
But a glance at my syllabi for the semester has me convinced that these two doodles will be my last for quite some time.
There's always fall break (or winter?).

I love babies. My friend of...wow, 20 years is due in a few weeks, and I drew a picture for her nursery. A woman at the shower asked if I had parakeets, and I said, "No, I just like to draw birds."

The jury is still out, but I'm pretty sure I get the prize for "most uncomfortable lady at a baby shower."

I also won a prize because I could finish a bunch of Mother Goose rhymes.
Just FYI, the second/alternate verse of Three Men in a Tub starts, "Rub-a-dub-dub, three men in a tub and how do you think they got there?"
They crawled out of a rotten potato. No really.

Now, I saved this right-side-up, and just tried to resave it, but alas, it wants to be upside-down, so here. I refuse to fight it.

The theme of the blog has become: I don't have time to draw as much as I used to.
But when I do, my drawings are more free-form. I no longer sketch--I just sit down and doodle til I have something that looks pretty decent.

That's how I ended up with this. It began as a positive/negative thing--fill in the background until the foreground/negative space made some sense. But I didn't like what grew out of it, so I hacked into it with a good ole Sharpie.

I will say, cross-hatching and it's mongrel cousin, scribbling (which I seem to prefer), make for some good therapy.

It is, after all, a hobby.

I'm never going to be a professional artist, so I'm trying to loosen up. Not obsess. Keep everything I make instead of throwing out what I deem unacceptable.

I wasn't sure what this was going to be. It all started as a doodle in my counseling notebook.

And when I grew tired of it, I stopped.

That way, it never feels like too much work.

At least, this is my interpretation.

A few months ago, I complained about being dried-up artistically. Now I'm bursting at the seams, it seems. The downside--I'm rushing things.

I drew this last night at a bar inside an hour, easily. Scribbled color on in about 10 minutes. The result isn't really what I wanted, and hey, I also managed to get a crooked scan of the dadburn thing. Did I re-do it? Nah.

I figure I can use this messy stuff as a jumping-off point. For instance, I now want to draw a thicket that actually looks like a whole mess of thorns reaching out to gitcha. This sort of looks like baby is hanging out in a soft, stary, bush-like thing.

Starting tomorrow. Take my time. I'm not ready to enter my "manic scribbling" phase just yet.

I am sentimental and nostalgic, almost to a fault.

If you ever come to my mother's house, I will make you look at my photo albums.

My mother, who is also sentimental, actually makes fun of me.
"Oh, Beth's gotta look at her pictures."
That's saying something.

Today I was visiting my step-mother's old scrapbooks.
Apparently in the summer of 1983, when I was 5 1/2 years-old, I started my "artistic" phase.
I was into portraiture, mostly in Crayola marker.

This one is for Carol, natch.

It's a study of our cat, Gookie. Notice my interesting use of perspective. The kitchen floor is located not under the cat, where one might expect it, but rather, in a more perpendicular orientation. So cutting edge. The sink is seemingly mid-air. Haunting. And this, apparently, is where I started my "no iris in the eye" thing, which is very sophisticated for a preschooler (Thanks to South Carolina schools, I didn't start Kindergarten until August 1983. Now you know.)

"Favorite Dad" is a piece that just makes me want to study children and art, and why they make the choices that they do. Why, in this seemingly simple study, did I insist on including fingers? You might not be able to tell in this scan, but I have saturated, nay, abused the paper in order to make the man's moustache. I think I wanted his brown facial hair to stand out against his Corinthian-leather, bronzed skin. I guess my dad was tan and shirtless this summer. I'm pretty sure those are "jorts." Ah, the early 80's.

25 years later, how far I've come. But part of me misses the abandon with which I used to create. No self-censoring or over-analyzing or attacks of plummeting self-esteem.

I just delivered my first official "sold" drawing.

Mike was so nice and complimentary.
I'm a little touched and a little swole-headed...as he told me he wouldn't have guessed I was an art show virgin (save for Student Gallery 1996 and other various student shows).

It's funny that he purchased the very first drawing I did for my "paperback" series. I'm reposting it, because I feel like a proud mother sending my baby off to college.

My professional artist friends scoffed at how cheaply I sold it. Some suggested that it shouldn't have gone for less than $100, but I was all giddy like a toothless rube at her first big-city dance. Givin' it up cheap.

But now that I think about how much Christopher LOVED this piece, maybe I should have started the bidding at $1000. I'll make you an even better one Bird-boy!

(as a side note--why is there white out on my scanner, and how do I fix it!?)

Coincidentally, I have been drawing on whatever I can find, so my "botanicals" are somewhat green, what with the reusing.

Back to the group last night.

It was maybe 85 degrees in the warehouse.

Bernard offered me wine. I said, "How old is this? It tastes kind of weird..."
Then I drank it anyway.

Our model arrived and we skipped warm-ups.
I fell asleep on the couch during the first pose. It felt reeeaaaally good to close my eyes.

I got some stuff done eventually, but it all feels sluggish and sort of like I drew it through cotton balls.

Lesson: If the wine is questionable, don't drink it. If you want to stay awake in a warm room, don't drink it.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is still one of my favorite books, and anytime I eat a pickle I think of little Francie Nolan.

Francie would get a fat, juicy pickle when she grew tired of her tenement fare. She would spend the whole day sucking on it and, in a way, cleansing her palate.

I have commented too often about my lack of inspiration.
So I just had a pickle.

I think I did this when I was a senior in high school.
Watercolor and colored pencil on cardboard.

It all started when I spilled a cup of nasty watercolor-water on something I was painting. Then I took the resulting smudge and forced it into this.

It looks like something my 14 year-old sister would wear on a t-shirt.
But hey, it came out of me at one point, and I have a new resolution to not throw away any old artwork, as embarrassing as it might be.

Ah, lovely Hannah.

So nice to see a soft, fluid, female form again.

I was so surprised that this was her first time posing.

See? Can you tell I was clearly shocked that this was her, like, second pose? You can probably also tell this was a one-minute sketch.

I was sitting on the couch, and while she was lovely and back-lit, I could not capture the effects of the lighting with my measly skills.

As she positioned herself for the next 20-minute pose, she said, "I'm your puppet!" Aha! I decided not to focus on shadows and light. Instead I just worked in outline. Do what I know how to do.

I'm trying to get better at this.

A fellow drawing-grouper(is that a fish?) asked if I elongated her on purpose (I know--she doesn't look super-long. In real life she's maybe 4'11"). I don't think that I did, but when he compared my work to Egon Schiele's, I decided to keep doing whatever it is I do. I luuurve Egon! (And I realize that my stuff looks not much like his. I just really like the guy.)

Just for fun, I'm sharing a work-in-progress.

I usually start with a sketch or some semblance of a sketch .

I'm still on my paperback kick. This one is on A Man for All Seasons, which means nothing. I just like the way it yellowed.

So yeah, reinterpret that sketch on the drawing surface!

This part of the drawing lasts the longest as I find myself obsessing over things like the portrayal of fingers, or what does a fawn look like when it's sitting?, or the effect of negative space on the composition.

I haven't been to the drawing group in a while. Last night was a first for me: the male model. Now, while I'll admit to seeing a naked male figure once or twice in my life, I never once had to study it and commit it to paper.

"Keys" (his stomach tattoo is actually a nickname, I've come to learn) strolled into the warehouse, said, "Ladies..." to me and Noelle (I imagine he'd tip his hat if he'd had one), and went into the bathroom. He emerged in a towel and only then did I realize that he was our model.

I'll just say that I wasn't especially inspired last night. The female figure, whether it's thin or curvy or dimpled or what have you, lends itself well to creating shadows and shapes. Maybe it was the lighting, but this male figure just didn't look....interesting, I guess. Plus, he did a "bridge" during the one minute sketches. You know, like a complete backbend. Nude. I'll stop there.

During the two minute sketches, I could only focus on parts at a time. Did it all on one piece of paper...gotta conserve.

The five minute pose gave me trouble. As you can see, I was unable to get that front leg foreshortened in a way that looked natural. Why? All I could see as I drew that leg was his scrotum. And I'm thinking, "Do I have to draw that? How does one draw the hint of a scrotum hiding behind a thigh?" The results pretty much speak for themselves.

During one twenty minute pose, I thought I'd focus on shadows. I ended up with a Superman-ish guy.

Another twenty minute pose, and still working that stick. What is that? A posing stick? Anyway, I wasn't feeling it, and I found that as I tried to make his hand lifelike, he kept moving the damn thing. So I was disgruntled.

I would like to say, for the record, thank you Chris (Keys) for posing. I could never do what you do. And I totally enjoyed seeing you flick your winkie as you dropped the towel.

Edit:The model's name was Krys. Was that tattoo a nickname or are my eyes just really that bad? And looking at the drawing group's flickr page reminds me that I'm just not good at this yet.

Aubrey Beardsley ran in the same crowd as Oscar Wilde. He died of Tuberculosis when he was 25. Some regarded his work as perverse. Asexual before asexual was cool.

I spent the day deleting inactive clients from some database because I needed to stay busy amid all the boredom. Sounds so cruel. Actually very boring and not conducive to secretly drawing in one's notebook. But until I get all my alreadybeendoneandfinished stuff on this blog, I won't feel at ease starting new pieces anyway. Blame it on the (insert personality disorder here) in me.

More ink on paperback covers. A little Crayola Art Nouveau touch here and there.

I hope to take one of my many sketchbooks out in public one day and work on drawing from life. I should probably thank the Norfolk Drawing Group for inspiring me to do so.

As it is now, my sketchbook is full of weird scribblings that I imagine a serial killer might make.

I mean, I eventually take said bizarre scribble and turn it into a finished project.

I think I just need to work on my craft a little. Like an athlete in training.
